EMDR
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing
EMDR Therapy is a highly effective treatment that can be used for a range of mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, and more.
EMDR is particularly popular because you aren't required to talk about your trauma, thoughts, or feelings, in too much detail!
EMDR can also help address negative beliefs and self-talk that usually hinder an individual’s personal growth and development.
Some common issues that can be treated through EMDR:
-
Trauma (childhood or recent)
-
PTSD
-
Anxiety

How does it work?

When we go into REM sleep, our eyes move. REM sleep is essential for mental restoration, emotional well-being, and cognitive function. If you’re not getting enough, it can lead to memory issues, mood imbalances, and even increased stress levels. REM sleep is a time when our brain processes events from the day and organizes the input like a filing system.
When we go through a trauma, highly emotional event, or multiple emotional events over time, our cortisol levels (stress hormone) rise and it becomes harder for our brain to process and organize itself when we sleep. When our brain doesn’t process memories and put them away, it carries the feelings, thoughts, and emotions from upsetting events and traumas into our day to day lives and sometimes we get triggered and feel those emotions like its happening again.
EMDR helps our brains process our emotions, trauma, triggers, and event recent events with the support of a counsellor. This is done using bi-lateral stimulation with either eye movements, or bi-lateral tapping. EMDR uses a structured approach and has been proven by years of research to be an effective treatment!
